Hello, I'm Vael! I'm interested in improving the safety of AI systems to reduce potential large-scale risks from advanced AI. My work focuses on "field-building": enabling and growing the technical (research and engineering) and governance communities working on AI safety.
To this end, I work as Head of Content at FAR.AI. I lead content and programming for the FAR.Futures division, which builds the broader AI safety field via global conferences, workshops and community engagement.
I previously founded and advised Arkose, an AI safety field-building nonprofit that provided informational resources to machine learning researchers and engineers looking to become more involved in the field.
Within academia, I was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, as a fellow with HAI and CISAC. There, I interviewed AI researchers on their perspectives on current AI and the future of AI, with a focus on risks from advanced systems.
I completed my PhD in Tom Griffiths's Computational Cognitive Science Lab at UC Berkeley / Princeton University, working on computational models of social cognition.
